FIREBALL XL-5

This show created a lifelong desire to fly the skies and travel in space. There is a gigantic leap between this show and Star Trek: Picard & Discovery. Yet all dreams have a starting point…

The show was broadcast in the United States on Saturday mornings from 1963 to 1965. Set between the years 2062 and 2063, the series featured the missions of spaceship Fireball XL5, commanded by Colonel Steve Zodiac of the World Space Patrol. The crew included glamorous Doctor Venus, a doctor of space medicine; middle-aged navigator and engineer Professor Matthew Matic and co-pilot Robert, a transparent robot.

The show was so popular it spawned a number of licensed merchandising spin-offs including toy rocket ships and figures, model kits, lunch boxes, puppets, ray guns, water pistols, comic strips and books.

The closing theme, Fireball, became a minor hit in Britain.
